Position Summary

An After School Program Mentor is responsible for supervising students, promoting and actively participating in all program activities, while providing a safe and fun learning environment, and serving as a positive role model for campers.

Position Objective/Purpose

We are seeking motivated team members who believe deeply in the organization's mission and who display a record of achievement in effective supervision & management of youth as it pertains to this position, building positive relationships, and ensuring the safety and well-being of people of all ages.

Position Scope Factors

Mentors are employed at the following site:

  • Trinity College Hartford, CT

4:00 PM 6:00 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays

1:00 PM 4:00 PM on Wednesdays

Mentors are required to commit to at least two afternoons per week, ideally Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays, unless other arrangements are approved by the Program Director.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  1. Group supervision of campers with attention to: behavior and group management, health, safety, security, and personal and skill development.
  2. Attend bi-weekly Team meeting.
  3. Work with a group of 4-6 students on academic support and literacy development.
  4. Utilize a variety of character development and social emotional learning activities.
  5. Promote and actively participate in all activities & projects.
  6. Work effectively with co-workers and collaborate on daily responsibilities.
  7. Teach or assist with programs.
  8. Complete assigned paperwork.
  9. Serve as a positive role model to campers.
  10. Follow the ESF Dream Camp Code and maintain the ESF Dream Camp Look at all times (uniform).
  11. Exhibit ESF Core Values at all times and to adhere to all company policies.
  12. Have fun.
  13. Other responsibilities as assigned.

Experience Requirements

  1. Previous experience working with children examples include but are not limited to: babysitting, academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant, religious education teacher, etc.
  2. Previous experience working with inner-city youth (preferred)

Education Requirements

  1. Minimum of 17 years of age.
  2. High School Graduate pursuing college degree.

Other Skill Requirements

  • Outstanding communication skills which include the ability to use clear, concise, and grammatically correct written and oral language in all aspects of professional interaction with campers, their families, peers, leadership team, and the larger community.

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to and takes direction from Program Director.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to push/pull, lift and carry a minimum of 35 lbs.
  2. Endurance to work outside and on your feet for 2 - 3 hours per day.
  3. Ability to respond to emergency situations which may require running (up to 1 mile in some cases) and climbing stairs.
  4. Good physical condition which enables candidate to execute all responsibilities associated with this position.
